Olive Lives On

Thank you to The McKay Press for choosing my photograph of Olive for the cover of their 2012 Calendar/Planner. Olive's personality was larger than life. Unfortunately, she had kidney disease and left us far too soon.

A special thanks to Jim Nigro, VP of Marketing at McKay. It is always a pleasure working with you and your team.

"Smile"

Kiev, Ukraine

© Dan Denardo Photography

***

If you’ve followed my work, perhaps you’ve noticed that smiling is rare in my photos. If someone is happy and smiling, that’s great...I'll gladly capture that. If they’re not smiling, I will rarely ask them to. Why would I want them to paint on an expression that is not heartfelt? I would much rather record their true mood at that moment.

Let's go back in history to the time of classic portrait painters like Rembrandt, Goya, Vermeer and DaVinci. Have you ever noticed any of their subjects smiling? They sought to capture the essence of their subject...their character. More often than not, the expression was neutral; neither inviting nor forbidding. It gives us room to interpret, to think...and to draw our own conclusions.

To me, smiling in most people shots is much like American pop culture – superficial. Laughter is real, as is anger and frustration. Why not keep it real? It’s not that I don't like smiles or smiling. I am, however, growing tired of the superficial smile that people (especially children) switch on nowadays…. usually after being asked to say “cheese” for the five-thousandth time. In fact, some “smiles” are not smiles at all. The lips part to reveal teeth in a way that doesn’t look the slightest bit natural or joyful.  It's a put-on. How do I know?

Their eyes aren’t smiling.

It's a smile that isn't true.

Jus' sayin'...

Faces of Honduras - Four

This is one of the sweetest ladies I have ever met.  She had a little table set up in an outdoor market and was selling fruit.  I could not speak a word of her language and she couldn't speak a bit of mine...yet we could gesture, laugh and give a hug.

Connecting with someone does not
require sharing a language. What they say is
fraction of what they are communicating.

A Difficult Existence

While in Honduras last week, I was reminded how blessed I am. The man above has a cane in one hand (fashioned from a stick) and a machete in the other hand.

I learned a statistic that I found both shocking and sad regarding emergency room visits in Honduras.  Most emergency visits in Honduras are caused by two things (in this order):

1.  Unintentional machete accidents.
2.  Intentional acts with machetes.

Welcome to the real world.....the world outside our privileged existence...

A Michigan Morning

Getting up at the crack of 6:00 was not on my agenda today. I returned from an international assignment in the wee hours this morning. The last thing on my mind this morning was to bolt outside with a camera. Then I looked out the window and saw a very dense fog and a hard frost. Off I went. No second thoughts.

One thing I've learned over the years with my photography is this:  There is no going back.  It won't look like this in one hour, let alone one day. Do it now. And I did. It's not close to being my best shot ever, but next week, the windmill may not even be there... it's an endangered species.  So it goes....

This little boy lives in a Haitian tent city. Twenty thousand homeless live in this tent city. The tent he shares with his family has no running water. No toilet. No electricity.

At night he is very afraid.

Heartwrenching Hands

SA_04.24.11-79

These little hands belong to African children with HIV/AIDS. At best, these kids will reach twenty years of age....some will not come close....

Photographing people in challenging circumstances has become a major part of my life.  Being "called" to do this work has changed me as a person. And at times, it has pushed my heart to the brink.

Photos like this are important to me.  Not only does this photo help illustrate a story - it serves as a personal reminder of my many blessings.

Detroit Metro Airport Underground

DetroitMetro.jpg

My feet have strolled this corridor dozens of times. Until this occasion, I never took the time to stop and photograph it.  The entire corridor is a beautiful work of art.  Ever-changing. Waves of light and sound.

I was so wrapped up in taking a series of photos that I totally lost track of time.  When I finally came to my senses, it was a mad dash to my gate.  I was the last person to board the plane for Germany...just a few minutes before the door closed.

Oops. Woulda been tough 'splainin' that one.
