The Doctor Bird

This is one of the most magnificent birds I have ever seen in the wild. I'm guessing this guy was 10-12" from its beak to the end of its tail. When he flew, the sound his wings made was almost lyrical. If you ever see one, you'll never forget it. However, you can only see it in one country on this planet.

From This is Jamaica:

"The doctor bird or swallow tail humming bird, is one of the most outstanding of the 320 species of hummingbirds. It lives only in Jamaica. These birds’ beautiful feathers have no counterpart in the entire bird population and they produce iridescent colour characteristics of only that family. In addition to these beautiful feathers, the mature male has two long tails which stream behind him when he flies. For years the doctor bird has been immortalized in Jamaican folklore and song."

Fire Brigade

You may remember from a previous post (Boston Ladder 15) that I have a soft spot in my heart for fire fighters. I shot this while on assignment in the former East Germany. This was their least serious moment in a day-long shoot, which is what I liked about it. Ya gotta love the firefighters - no matter the country. We owe them a BIG debt of gratitude.

It's Tough Being a Kid...

...especially when you have 35 brothers. With nearly 70 kids at the orphanage, it can get "rough and tumble" to say the least. A few stitches later, all is well.

A big mango, plucked from a tree moments earlier, will take his mind off his noggin.

Big Hair Day

Saturday morning is big hair time in Jamaica. As you may know, beaded braids are a cultural norm in the Caribbean islands. Saturday morning is the time to comb out your hair and adopt your new look for the coming week. In my visits to the Caribbean, I've seen some amazing hair designs that are very creative and artistic.

Art is all around us. We simply need to open our eyes, open our ears, open our minds and take it in. It's a gift.

Water Drop Abstraction

Yes, a driving rain will make a mess of your windows. It's also a great photo opportunity. I guess I'm a glass is half-full guy.

When I started this blog last October (nearly 150 posts ago), I was worried that I would never have enough photos to post on a regular basis. In fact, this has been a wonderful catalyst for me to keep "seeing", shooting and creating. It's a big (and small) world out there. Thank God for that.
